These instruments were used by performers and audience members to apply custom cosmetics and modify sculptures along with their own bodies. The instruments are embedded with electronics that trigger sounds that mutate gestures of transformation.
The mirror sings when the performer/viewer picks it up; its volume and tone changes based on the tilt within each axis of the embedded accelerometer. The sound subverts the mirror’s implied power-of-reflection—and to praise the agency of the (any gendered) gaze of the viewer.
This sculpture houses electronic/audio components for the musical beauty instruments, used by performers and audience members for the duration of the exhibition EXORCISES at Commonwealth & Council (LA), 2016.
